Queens Roger Taylor visits the ACM to open new Roger Taylor Zildjian Studio.

2011-10-28-acm-zildjian-qaQueen’s Roger Taylor visited the Academy of Contemporary Music (ACM) in Guildford on Friday, October 28 to open ACM’s new 80 seat Roger Taylor Zildjian Studio in association with Zildjian cymbals. During his visit, students were lucky enough to meet the legendary sticksman and benefit from Roger’s knowledge during a question and answer session, which was then followed by a signing session and a performance by ACM students.

ACM’s Roger Taylor Zildjian Studio boasts a stage with full band set up and lighting rig, plus an incredible display of Queen memorabilia, which has been kindly gifted to the Academy by Roger Taylor and Zildjian.  The Queen collection includes drum skins, sticks and posters from huge Queen tours such as The Works and News Of The World, all of which have been signed by Roger. The studio will be of invaluable use to students studying at the Academy across the Performance, Production and Business faculties.

Zildjian are one of ACM’s longest-standing supporters, having sponsored and provided cymbals to the Academy ever since it opened its doors back in 1995. The company’s own illustrious history stems back much further, to its founding in 1623, since which they have supplied world-class products to internationally renowned performing artists, including Roger Taylor himself.

Speaking about the studio, Roger said ‘This is just amazing. We had nothing at school, in fact nothing but disapproval. There was no school drum kit, let alone a room full of drum kits. So this is like a dream come true.’

Roger Taylor is one of many acclaimed recording artists to lend their time and support to the Academy-speaking about Roger’s visit, ACM’s Business Development and Commercial Manager James Connell said. ‘Roger is an inspirational artist and rock legend, and we are privileged and honoured that he has chosen to support ACM in this way’.

ACM provides opportunities to study part and full-time at Diploma, Higher Diploma, Degree and Master level. For further information please visit www.acm.ac.uk . All places are limited and offered on a first come, first-served basis.

Guildford’s Academy of Contemporary Music has announced legendary Queen drummer Roger Taylor as its new Patron for Music.

He joins the Academy alongside Patron for Industry, respected music executive Nigel Elderton, and Patron for Education, the esteemed Lord Lingfield.

Surrey resident Roger is no stranger to ACM, having cut the ribbon last year on the Academy’s 80-seat Roger Taylor Zildjian Studio.

During his visit, Roger delivered a master class to a packed room of ACM students and donated Queen memorabilia to display in the performance studio.

Among the memorabilia is a drum kit that Roger played on stage in America, South America, Asia, Europe and the UK during Queen’s Game tours of 1980 and 1981.

“I am delighted and honoured to be a patron of the Academy of Contemporary Music. Amazing places like this didn’t exist when we were learning to be a group.

I can’t imagine the impact it would have had: I guess we would have been a whole lot better. I wish all students at least some of the luck, life and career that I have had!”
ROGER TAYLOR Queen

“Roger embodies everything about ACM, from his passion for performing, to the talent and hard graft on which he has built his astonishing career.

His lifetime of experience meant he had some amazing stories to tell at his master class and he was great with the students too.

Roger is a musical icon who our students and staff really look up to. We are incredibly proud to have him on board.”
